La Fête du Petardier

Oh… I love traditional events! They teach you so much about the culture of a country, region or village in such a fun way! 2 weeks ago we had the Fête du Petardier in my village. This events celebrates the big victory that took place in 1586 during the war of the religions. Inhabitants dress up and play a scene of the victory and you can get hot wine.

Castellane is normally cold in winter and as it is living from the summer season most people are gone and just a small amount of people are left. Some would say it is basically deserted in winter. Therefore, events like these are a great opportunity to get people together!

The history

It basically started with the start of the religious wars in 1559, which at that time broke out in the village. Castellane was converted to the prostestantism. The village got then attacked two times in 1560 and 1574. Both of the time repelled.

Then this attack happened in 1586. The Protestants represented by the Duke of Lesdiguère and the Baron of Germany at the head of their troops marched to Castellane. They attempted a surprise attack in order to take and plunder the city again. Judithe Andrau, who was living in the nearby village Barréme, saw the troops in the forest and hastened to warn Castellane. The Castellanais, were lacking military support and had to organize their own defense against the attackers.

Not much more is known about the victory. However, we do know, that this same Judithe Andrau, the heroine of the day, killed Jean Motte, the captain of the attackers. In fact, she threw a heavy iron pan with a boiling substance on his head from the top of the door of the Annonciade. This gate, which still exists today, was the weak point of the city at the time. As for the Baron of Germany, he was wounded by a bullet in the back. And this is the way that the attack ended and the castellanais won the great victory!

Oh… Comme j’adore les fêtes traditionnels! Les evenements comme ca t’apprennent tellement des choses sur la culture d’un pays, une region ou un village dans une façon amusante! Il y a 2 semaines qu’on a eu La Fête du Petardier dans mon village. Cet événement commémore la grande victoire de la guerre des religions a 1586 à Castellane. Les habitants du village font une reconstitution théâtralisée de l’événement et tu peux y boire du vin chaud en regardant la spectacle!

Il fait bien froid à Castellane pendant l’hiver et depuis que la saison d’été est terminée la plupart des personnes sont partis. Certains diront que le village est déserté ou ‘mort’. Les événements comme ca sont une bonne opportunité pour se retrouver.

L’histoire

Tout est commencé avec la commence de la guerre de religions à 1559. Castellane a été converti au protestantisme. Le village est ensuite attaqué à deux reprises en 1560 et 1574. Les deux fois repoussées.

Puis cette attaque se produisit en 1586. Les protestants représentés par le Duc de Lesdiguère et le Baron d’Allemagne à la tête de leurs troupes marchaient vers Castellane. Ils ont tenté une attaque surprise afin de prendre et de piller à nouveau la ville. Judith Andrau, qui vivait dans le village voisin de Barréme, aperçut les troupes dans la forêt et se dépêcha de prévenir Castellane. Les Castellanais, manquant de soutien militaire, ont dû organiser leur propre défense contre les envahisseurs.

On en sait pas beaucoup plus sur cette victoire. Cependant, nous savons que cette même Judith Andrau, l’héroïne du jour, a tué Jean Motte, le capitaine des assaillants. En effet, elle lui a jeté sur la tête, du haut de la porte de l’Annonciade, un chaudron contenant une substance bouillante. Cette porte, qui existe encore aujourd’hui, était le point faible de la ville à l’époque. Quant au baron d’Allemagne, il a été blessé d’une balle dans le dos. Et c’est ainsi que l’attaque s’est terminé et que les castellanais ont remporté la grande victoire!
